Mindful of leaks and spy shots, officials at Jaguar kept most of the details on its XKR-S GT coupe under wrap till today, when they finally unveiled it just ahead of this weekend’s New York International Auto Show. A track-ready version of its XK coupe and designed by Jaguar’s ETO division, the XKR-S GT is a large cat on the prowl during track racing, but perfectly docile as a kitten while on the road. This multifaceted ability is largely thanks to its aerodynamic styling, improved upon with the addition of carbon fiber front splitter, panelings, and a large rear wing. Other improvements include bespoke suspensions and dampers, completely adaptive to road conditions and drive. These and a supercharged 5.0-liter V8 engine with 550 horsepower to spare, the XKR-S GT is capable of tearing out asphalt from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.9 seconds.
While all the improvements were performance-oriented, the XKR-S GT is still a Jaguar and with it comes all of the premium amenities such as 16-way electrically adjustable performance seat in soft-grain leather and Suedecloth, Jet Suedecloth headlining and steering wheel, plus handsomely machined aluminum paddle shifters right behind it.
With only 30 cars scheduled to be in production, the XKR-S GT is by far the rarest of Jaguar’s R-Series performance class. Priced at around $174,000 USD, the Jaguar XKR-S GT goes on sale in August.
