In a much publicized event back in February, NBA great Shaquille O’Neal, along with Swizz Beatz and Tyga, first unveiled the return of Reebok Shaq Attaq. Now with the launch day just a week away, we take a closer look at this 90s classic, not to mention a much sought after design.
Back in 1992 when it needed to make its presence known on the basketball court, Reebok enlisted the most dominant player at the time, Shaquille O’Neal, to its roster of athletes. Almost overnight, the 7-foot tall powerhouse charged his way into that season’s NBA Rookie of the Year title, several NBA All-Star Games, numerous records, and a career spanning 19 years, all the while playing in two of the most iconic Reebok basketball shoes – the Shaq Attaq and the Shaqnosis.
One of the first basketball footwear to incorporate the Reebok Pump technology, the Reebok Shaq Attaq (now known as Reebok Classic Shaq Attaq) was also the first to apply Graphlite, a cutting edge plastic polymer with uncanny durability. Because of this lightweight material, designers were able to strip away the cumbersome rubber element. In a mostly white composition with overlay in contrasting black, the Shaq Attaq also featured a tint of Orlando blue for the first professional team O’Neal played for.
In all of its original form, the much anticipated re-release of Reebok Classic Shaq Attaq will take place on Friday, April 19th. Some of the key retailers to offer the retro rendition include Jimmy Jazz, Shiekh, Villa, City Gear, DTLR, Shoe Palace, as well as Reebok’s online store. But because of unexpected volume of demands, key retailers such as 1973 by Mr. R (Miami Beach, FL), Millennium Shoes (Inglewood, CA), and Shoe City (Hyattsville, MD) will be offering pre-launch purchases. So stay tuned for more release information to come.
