Nike x NASA x USAID x U.S. Department of State LAUNCH 2020 | Video

LAUNCH is a strategic program that brings together Nike, NASA, USAID and the U.S. Department of State, all in an effort to take on one of the world’s biggest challenges — the sustainability of materials and how they are made. As part of the initiative, a series of forums are regularly convened in which visionaires showcase their innovative approaches to uncovering and developing sustainable materials. Last month’s LAUNCH 2020 Summit in Beaverton, Oregon — a two-day event welcoming 150 materials specialists, designers, academics, manufacturers, entrepreneurs and NGOs — highlighted the importance of innovation and collaboration. Featured speaker Hannah Jones, the Nike VP of Sustainable Business and Innovation, conveyed the scope of the challenges that lay ahead: “About 60 percent of the environmental footprint of a pair of Nike shoes is embedded in the materials used to make them,” she noted. “When you multiply that across our business, and across the industry, it’s clear that innovation in sustainable materials is a huge opportunity, not just for Nike, but for the world.” Also speaking at the LAUNCH 2020 Summit was Joan Benoit Samuelson, who competed in the 1984 Summer Olympics and became the first ever women’s Olympic Gold Medalist, and Ron Garan, Astronaut and LAUNCH Innovator. Both discussed their passion for the environment, while also offering their unique perspective on the importance of collaboration in achieving seemingly insurmountable odds.
