Last Friday Lauryn Hill released a new single, “Neurotic Society (Compulsory Mix),” constituting the reclusive singer’s first release in almost three years. The track features cascading strings over a propulsive beat, in which Hill delivers a stream of observations at breakneck speed about the state of contemporary American culture. The parenthetical button on the song’s title is presumably a reference to the $1 million deal Hill signed with Sony, an agreement that allows her to avoid prison time for tax evasion. Hill took to Tumblr to explain the circumstances surrounding the song’s release: “Here is a link to a piece that I was ‘required’ to release immediately, by virtue of the impending legal deadline. I love being able to reach people directly, but in an ideal scenario, I would not have to rush the release of new music …” Check out the track below, which is available for download now through iTunes.
