On this exact day 140 years ago, businessman Levi Strauss and tailor Jacob Davis finally received the approval of their patent, U.S. Patent 139,121. In it, a rough abstract and simple line drawing by Davis called for “Improvement in Fastening Pocket-Openings” by using rivets to strength them. And while insignificant at the time, this launched the original and the first blue jean as we know it, the Levi’s 501. To mark the birth of this fashion and cultural icon, Levi’s created a visual timeline through a video slideshow, featuring achieved photos of crucial events that took place during the last 140 years along with the 501’s evolutions in design. A happy 140 to you, Levi’s 501!
