New Yorkers, head over to Times Square today to see a truly impressive LEGO creation: a 1:1 scale model of an X-Wing fighter from the original Star Wars trilogy. 42 times the size of the official Star Wars x LEGO 9493 X-Wing Starfighter kit, the gargantuan model is built with a total of 5,335,200 bricks. It measures 11 feet tall and 43 feet long, with a wingspan of 44 feet and a total weight of 45,979 pounds. A nice lifelike touch: the engines roar and glow a bright red, giving the impression it could take flight any second. It took 32 builders putting in 17,336 hours (approximately 4 months) to complete the build. Created to promote the Cartoon Network series The Yoga Chronicles, the model was transported by ship from the LEGO Model Shop in the Czech Republic. It’s now on display in the heart of Times Square, where it will reside for three days. Afterward it’s headed to the West Coast. Check out detailed looks in the gallery below.
