It was certainly an eventful weekend in Shanghai, China’s very own “Eternal City.” Not only was Kevin Durant in town to help kick off the new Nike Summer Nights initiative with tennis pro Li Na, the OKC Thunder Forward was there for the opening phase of his 2013 Nike Basketball Tour across China. For the occasion, Durant and Leo Chang, the Design Director of Nike Basketball, took the opportunity to unveil the newest Nike KD VI special edition, the Nike KD VI “Bamboo.”
While it is one of the fastest growing plant life on Earth, bamboo, a form of grass, still requires five years to reach maturity and greatness. Seeing the similarities between the plant’s growth and how Durant’s career took off after his fifth NBA season, Chang superimposed bamboo’s outlines onto KD VI’s Hyperfuse upper. Its colorway light green and brown, plus a “KD” initials written in the likeness of a Chinese character for bamboo “?”, further propagate Chang’s concept visually.
Very limited in quantity, the Nike KD VI “Bamboo” is currently available as an exclusive release in the Greater China region, with the possibilities of a worldwide launch in the coming months.
