2013 MTV Video Music Awards Unveiled 60-Foot Moonman Statue by KAWS

By - August 26th, 2013

Working in conjunction with Brooklyn-base artist KAWS, the set designers for MTV really took the saying “When In Doubt, GO BIG!” to heart… In preparation for last night’s 2013 MTV Video Music Awards at Brooklyn’s own Barclays Center, KAWS (aka Brian Donnelly) and the MTV VMA staffers erected 60-foot tall MTV Moonman statue. Designed with references to KAWS’ signature Companion figure and this year’s re-designed MTV VMA Moonman trophy, the giant Moonman hangs over award show like the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man in Ghostbusters. In fact, it easily dwarfs KAWS’ other giant creations – his 16-Foot Companion (Passing Through) and his Companion balloon float in the 2012 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. To put its mammoth size into perspective, MTV created an infograph for a side-by-side comparison with rapper Macklemore, Tyrannosaurus Rex, Transformers‘ Optimus Prime, and all of the players on Brooklyn Nets. No words on where the Moonman will go next…
