According to Anton Faulconbridge, founder of the Cardiff-based Rantmedia Games in the UK, one can define the essence of what makes a truly great video game by first eliminating what it’s not about – namely faster gigahertz, fancier graphics or extra gigabytes of memory. Rather, the key is gameplay, and as Anton and his team see it, the best games originated from the ’80s and early ’90s. And one of the best consoles from that era — ranked no. 12 in IGN’s list of top 25 greatest video game consoles of all time — is ColecoVision, home to landmark titles like Donkey Kong, Zaxxon and Frogger. Consequently, Rantmedia has taken to Kickstarter to develop a ColecoVision app, recreating Coleco’s system experience with 20-plus classic games. Once it’s reached its $250,000 funding goal, Rantmedia expects to release an iOS version of the software by March.
