Like many of his peers, professional surfer Rob Machado sees himself as a journeyman, one who travels endlessly in the search of that perfect wave to ride on. In the third episode of his “Through The Lens” documentary series, Machado stopped by the Big Island of Hawaii for a visit. However this particular trip was more than just about riding waves, it was the collaboration between Hurley, Machado himself, and his good friend, artist Sig Zane.
An ambassador to the world when it comes to Hawaiian arts, Sig Zane continues the tradition passed down centuries ago and connects them with their contemporaries. In a process similar to woodblock prints, Zane first hand illustrate subjects provided by Machado’s photos. Then with a steady hand and a utility knife, carved out each on amberlith film. The resulting graphics will find themselves on limited edition hat, tee, and boardshort for men, along with a tank and top for women, from Hurley, which will be in store during the early part of 2014.
