Ahead of its eventual launch, http://bmw.com/” target=”_blank”>BMW has released a video that educates viewers on the performance capabilities of the BMW i8. The clip goes into detail about how the hybrid and gasoline engine systems work together, highlighted by two motors the vehicle uses to get around. One at the front — the same electric motor on the i3 — is downgraded to develop just 129 horsepower and 184 lb ft-of torque, enough to make sure the 5 Kw battery drives the car emission-free for around 20 miles. An additional e-motor is placed in the rear, adjacent to the combustion engine and able to produces 13 hp and 81 lb-ft of torque. Its main function is to recharge the battery and start the combustion engine. In hybrid mode it smooths out power delivery to match up the revs when switching driving modes. The upshot is 357 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque, resulting in a 0-62 mph time of 4.4 seconds. Check out the video below.
