Ford C Max Solar Energi Concept Car

Ford has selected next week’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas to introduce its C-Max Solar Energi concept car, a solar-powered plug-in hybrid equipped with solar panels built into the roof. The problem with the solar panels is that they’re capable of absorbing only enough energy to charge an eighth of the battery’s capacity — just three miles of electric-powered driving. Consequently, Ford worked with California solar energy firm SunPower to develop a special concentrator that acts like a magnifying glass, directing intense rays to the solar panels while the car is parked. Ford will begin testing the technology on its C-Max Energi this year, which currently exhibits a range of about 621 miles, 21 of which is run solely on electric power.
