Nike Air Max Day

History was made on March 26, 1987, as the day marked the launch of the Nike Air Max 1, and with it, a revolution in performance footwear design. The revolution was ten years in the making, beginning with aerospace engineer Frank Rudy and his ingenious idea — a running shoe fitted with a prototype airbag. Rudy presented Nike founder Phil Knight with a pair during a visit to the company’s world headquarters, and following a lengthy period of trial and error, Rudy’s concept was applied to the Air Tailwind in 1978. Of course, the real impact of the innovation would occur almost a decade later, when footwear designer legend Tinker Hatfield created the Air Max 1. Twenty-seven years later, Nike is recognizing 3.26, the day that started it all. As part of the celebration, Nike has created a dedicated site where visitors can enjoy the full Nike Air Max experience. Additionally, Nike Sportswear presents the Air Max 1 “Air Max Day,” combining the original white/red upper with a volt midsole, accentuating the visible Air. Look for the kicks to launch this month.
