Nike Air Bakin | Release Info

Long before his post-NBA controversy, Tim Hardaway unintentionally stirred up much anger in the Islamic world when he first wore his signature Nike Air Bakin. Unbeknown to the 5-time NBA All-Star and the designers at Nike, the flaming “Air” lettering on the heel panel had much semblance to the Arabic word for “Allah”. Hence, majority of Air Bakin’s first production run were shelved and later destroyed. However, despite the setback then and now, there is no denying the fact that Hardaway was the best point guard of his generation, a lofty goal his son Hardaway Jr. is shooting for now within the New York Knicks organization.

Previously re-released in 2007 to mark the design’s 10th anniversary, the shoe that stylized streetball during the 1990s is back for another round. Set to take over a basketball court near you this Saturday, April 5th, the Nike Air Bakin will be available via Nike and Nike Sportswear retailers such as Philadelphia’s own UBIQ.

There's no way the designers didn't know about the "Allah" script resemblance.
