“I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the earth.”
Inspired in part by President J.F.Kennedy’s bold challenge back in 1961 and the subsequent “Space Race” with the Soviet Union that followed, the partners at EXTRA BUTTER decided to use the same theme in their upcoming collaboration with Saucony. The deciding factor came when Bernie Gross of EXTRA BUTTER delved deeper into Saucony’s history and its association with space exploration. Formerly known as Hyde Footwear, NASA commissioned the company to design special boots for its astronauts during 1960s. Those boots later became the first footwear to participate in some of the earliest space walks. EXTRA BUTTER picked up the story some three decades later when NASA introduced the Advanced Crew Escape Suit, or ACES, in 1994.
Nicknamed the “Pumpkin Suit” for its emergency orange color, the ACES is fully pressurized suit to aid astronauts in case of depressurization. By applying the same emergency orange onto the nylon/suede upper of the Saucony Grid 9000, EXTRA BUTTER reimagined two forgotten aspects of the US Space Program into a singular design. Comes with 3M reflective elements and interchangeable patches, referring to an astronaut’s arduous rite of passage from one training to another before becoming a Mission Specialist, the EXTRA BUTTER x Saucony Grid 9000 “ACES”, the first installment to the EXTRA BUTTER x Saucony “Space Race” Pack, will be available starting this Thursday, April 24th, at EXTRA BUTTER’s Lower East Side location. A release at its Merrick Road location will follow on Saturday, April 26th, and finally, through its online store on Monday, April 28th.
