It was apparent early on that Christopher Raeburn‘s Spring/Summer 2015 collection — marched down the runway at this week’s London Collections: Men — would be taking on an aviation theme. Specifically, the acclaimed British designer looked for inspiration in the desert “boneyards” of Arizona where, thousands of decommissioned military aircraft lie crumbling in the desert sun. In true Raeburn style, wherein sustainability is always paramount, Swiss military capes were transformed into translucent bomber jackets, parachutes became mac coats, and MIG fighter-pilot suits were granted second lives as laced jackets. Floral prints sprinkled throughout conferred the kind of “alchemy” that Raeburn strives for, where the collection’s graphic militaristic pastiche is leavened with more playful design elements.
