COMME des GARÇONS – Spring/Summer 2015 Collection | Runway Show

While it’s true that fashion and politics make for uneasy bedfellows, Rei Kawakubo — the soft-spoken visionary behind COMME des GARÇONS — tailored the brand’s Spring/Summer 2015 collection around an anti-war statement. “But in a quiet way,” Kawakubo explained, “with no words.” This proved to be something of a distortion of the facts, as suit jackets would be graffitied with phrases like “Anything war can do, peace can do better,” but the underlying message resonated most loudly underneath the surface. The model army trooped down the runway in military-inspired suiting accented with faux leopard skin or camouflage netting, paired with boots equipped with outrageously extended toes, curling up into decorative tusks. The details rendered the theater of war into a parade of dandies, outfitted in military garb entirely unsuited for the battleground.
