At a special event in Berlin, Daimler pulled the wraps off the 2016 Smart ForTwo and ForFour, rebuilt from the ground up to revitalize the struggling Smart brand while capitalizing on an increasingly popular auto market segment. The new two-door and a four-door editions keep the rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout of the previous generation, but are now powered by a trio of three-cylinder engines, generating 60, 71 or 90 horsepower. Buyers will have a choice of a five-speed manual or “twinamic” dual-clutch automatic transmission, while the standard equipment list includes LED daytime running lights, touch-screen infotainment system and navigation, lane control assist, smartphone integration and “Crosswind Assist.” Externally, the ForTwo presents an evolution of the previous design, with Smart offering up 40 different exterior color schemes.
