The folks over Mindtribe, a San Francisco-based engineering consultancy, recently got their hands on the self-lacing Nike HyperAdapt, and they methodically took the shoe apart to determine how the technology works. For our purposes, we'll start at the end: Mindtribe's final analysis is that Nike did an impressive job: "Building a tiny, rugged, high-torque system that fits into a wearable and provides a seamless user experience is no easy task," they conclude, "especially for a company that primarily focuses on softgoods." They also see the possibility for expansion of the technology to include "energy harvesting, bluetooth connectivity, or activity-specific lacing profiles," and that a self-lacing future for sneakers is definitely on the horizon.
