Suffering a flat tire during an extended ride is one of the few drawbacks of bicycle travel. Bridgestone has developed a new sort of tire that guards against such a calamity. The company's solution is an air-free tire, which uses a series of wavy spokes made with thermoplastic resin. The resulting tire drastically reduces maintenance time and effectively eliminates the threat of tire puncture. Additionally, the structure reduces resistance by maintaining the tire shape as it rolls, which maximizes efficiency and lessens wasted energy. Bridgestone plans to roll out its air-free tire in 2019.
