Even among toy aficionados, SECRET BASE’s creations are a niche to themselves. These coveted toys are sought after for their details and very limited availability, though not everyone would place them on their wishlist. To continue with our introduction of key Japanese brands, we visited SECRET BASE early this year, to find out more about it and its products.

Your iconography is a broad scope jam-packed with references to all sorts of cultural symbols. What is it about you that makes such seemingly disconnected substance come together in a cohesive line known as Absurd?
Well each graphic that I use somehow is a reflection of my upbringing…my life is what keeps the brand cohesive…absurd is a extension of my different moods and personalities…for those who know me , they know I’m funny, sarcastic, and full of useless knowledge…just another kid that grew up in NYC.

International Sneaker Battle – June 24th – Edison, NJ
ISB!!! What’s going on with the first ever International Sneaker Battle?
Well it has taken a lot of hard work and straight love to come to this first show. We wanted an event that both super official sneaker heads and regular kids from the hood can come, display their collection, and see what we consider the finer things in life kicks, cloths, cars, chicks, and (to some people) celebrities. We wanted the celebrities to be apart of the show so they can come hang out and interact with their fans. We want this show to be an avenue for people who love kicks, creativity, and the movement that has developed out of these two genres (is that the right word genre? If not replace it with a good word).

Though music industry people tend to flop when setting their sights on the clothing game, Run Athletics seems to be avoiding this type of emasculating failure through integrity based marketing. Describe how the Arthur Ashe campaign started and what it means to Run Athletics?
First, I’d definitely like to address your first statement. It’s a true one indeed. As a matter of fact our company initially started off in apparel and the market didn’t receive it to well. We restrategized and realized that we were overlooking a major part of business which we were doing great in FOOTWEAR!!

So who’s running this Bodega anyway?
We’re a gang of three: Jay, Oliver & Dan. We’ve all been separately involved in many different hustles… everything from running plastics plants, painting burners, mowing lawns, DJing, professional gambling, graphic design, ceramics, building trades, bouncing at punk rock clubs, pumping gas…Now we run a filthy bodega that’s poorly stocked and never open – seems like a natural progression.

Senior Editor Thomas Bradley recently caught up with the Weekly Drop crew and turned the mic on them with questions on interviews, audio equipment, and the interesting folk WD interviews.
> Weekly Drop Podcast
We want names! Who was behind The Weekly Drop concerning its use of the audio based interview concept as opposed to the text format we are doing now?
ROB:
Jeff and I. Jeff came to me and was like… “Lets do this podcast”.. And I was like.. “what the fuck is a podcast?” I think Jeff would rather do audio.. because his fingers are too fat to type.
JEFF:
Both Rob and I have written our fair share of stories about sneaker culture in the past years. The difficulty for me was I preferred the op-ed writing on actual product. Problem is no one wanted those stories.
