Moleskin has prided itself on being the canvas of inspiration for two centuries, serving as legendary notebooks for artists, writers, intellectuals and travelers everywhere. For having been on the front line of creativity, the collaboration between Moleskin, MoMA’s Tim Burton retrospective comes as a fitting surprise. Just opened in November, MoMA is currently holding the Tim Burton Exhibition, a retrospective on the quirky director’s extraordinary portfolio. Showcased are sketches, set illustrations and installations that have never been revealed to public before (including Burton’s personal notebooks and experimental films he created as a student). To celebrate and commemorate the retrospective exhibition, A special Moleskin 2010 Weekly Planner has been created, featuring Tim Burton’s signature embossed on the cover alongside the MoMA logo. Also, the planner comes bound in a special paper band chronicling a list of hit Burton features. As previously reported, Spike Jonze will participating in Sundance this year with a short film, I’m Here, created in collaboration with ABSOLUT Vodka. The short film depicting a robot love story set in modern day Los Angeles is now available in print. The movie celebrates creativity by creating an interestingly abject world where robots and human beings seem to coexist in the same environment. The story seems quite typical of your contemporary love story– a lonely librarian (Andrew Garfield from The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus) drifts through a mediocre and mundane life until he meets an adventurous female robot (Sienna Guillory, one of Maxim’s 100 sexiest women) who challenges his understanding of both the world and himself. The book is now available for order via: Nieves. Get a first look inside the book, check out the trailer and stay tuned for the film’s release on I’m Here.

Your shoes are important because they protect you on your travels and explorations in the world. They help you walk that extra mile and keep you warm when it’s cold outside. Now imagine, what if your shoes can do more– more than taking your on your journey in the outside world. What if, your shoes can unlock another dimension and take you into a whole new world all within the comforts of your own home? Think it is nothing more than a reverie? adidas Originals will prove you wrong and change your perception about the function and definition of shoes this year with its latest adidas Originals Augmented Reality Experience campaign.
As previously reported, the adidas Originals Augmented Reality (AR) Experience is an interactive digital world featuring a 3D adidas Originals Neighborhood which unfolds as one holds the adidas Originals AR shoe up to the webcam and let the computer recognize the AR code on the shoe tongue. The Neighborhood will then extend from the real shoe on screen and celebrities friends of the label will greet and introduce consumers to the new experience.
Aside from being the key to the Trefoil world, the shoe also acts as a controller from which consumers will be able to play interactive games and explore the neighborhood. All games from campaign will reference a cultural or product element of adidas Original’s Spring/Summer 2010 campaign. On that note, one element not to be missed is the adidas Originals x Star Wars collaboration. As such, the first experience to launch on Feb. 9 caters specifically to the Star Wars collection and the game allows fans to fire blue paint ballons at Stormtroopers around the Neighborhood.
So far, the AR pack products include five iconic adidas Originals sneakers, the Superstar, Stan Smith, Forum, Nizza and Samba. The shoes come in five easy to wear monochrome colorways–red for the Forum, black for Stan Smith, electric yellow for Nizza, bright blue for Superstar and grey for Samba. All are tonal and clean without being dull and would not only instantly amp up your outfit but also your life with AR functions. Aside from shoes, two pieces of apparel will also be embedded with AR codes.
While the pack will be available this month (and in mid-February stateside), for those who would like a taste of the experience, adidas Originals will release a printable code on the AR Neighborhood website on Feb. 9. Check out your closest adidas Originals stores and get the full availability list online.
As for what’s to come next for adidas Original’s mind-blowing, innovative campaign– the label will be launching a skateboarding-themed game in March and a music-themed DJ game in April. Gamers will be able to collect “trophies” from games and win larger prizes. Also, an iPhone application is also in store for the later part of 2010.
With this much going on at the Trefoil Neighborhood, it seems like it’s time to stow away that wii nunchuck to make space for the Superstar.

While the concept of adidas Originals was to bring back the classics and give casual sportswear a cool funky retro touch while staying contemporary and relevant, the overwhelmingly popular adidas line has become so highly evolved that it has branched out into different aesthetics, styles, also with help from numerous high profile collaborators such as New York City’s own Jeremy Scott and Kazuki Kuraishi from Japan. Of course, the label has also tapped into the largest sci-fi fan base for 2010 with a much reported, extremely anticipated and recently dropped collaboration with Star Wars.
Now, looking back into the adidas Originals roots, another highlight for the label this season is a brand new A.039 line. As most would likely be puzzled by the naming of the new line-up, the enlightening answer is that A.039 is an internal code within adidas for adidas Originals blue. As such, the new line plays and twists Original blue into a whole collection of outfits that equip its wearer from head to toe in basics with a blue twits. A geometric crewneck sweater with stacked triangles of different shades of blue is paired with basic, can-do-no-wrong khakis, capped off with tonal high top navy sneakers. A powder blue bomber jacket gives all that great spring-appropriate pastel shade which is ever so flattering under the sun.
The aesthetics of the line remain simple and contemporary without blatant branding or courageously jutting graphics that fans of Jeremy Scott would so embrace. A solid collection that is easy to wear for all, the line is differentiated from the rest of the adidas Originals products with its special “A.039″ label. Look out for them at your closest adidas Originals store in the coming months and get your little dose of Original blue. via: HS

In late 2009, Brooklyn’s finest (or correction, possibly the world’s finest) Jay-Z has won the hearts and ears of the world, putting all in the Empire State of Mind. Rap’s leading man has proved that even in an era where the consumption of music has changed drastically and moved off the radio waves onto iTunes (and let’s face it, other P2P sharing programs) a sensational hit is still possible. For the February cover story of Interview Magazine, famed film critic and current special correspondent of Interview Magazine met up with Jay-Z at his Brooklyn studio to discuss the rapper’s latest international success, The Blueprint 3.
The interview proved to be deeper than the usual conversation about what goes on behind the hit album, but a rather detailed look into Jay-Z’s life, through the latter’s very won retrospection. Age, childhood, perception of the world and fame all came into play when attempting to create the next best thing– simply an album that is new, different, winning, and a true reflection of the artist. Jay-Z reflected on the lives of rappers behind the feuds, fame, and how age can sometimes become a crippling factor in music making. Other than sharing anecdotes of Eminem wearing a bulletproof vest, Jay-Z also puts in his two cents about Kanye West (a passionate man whose passion can sometimes be misunderstood), the latter’s debacle with Taylor Swift (“[doing] the wrong thing to the wrong person at the wrong time”) and why he avoids award shows. Read the rather illuminating interview on Jay-Z and also enjoy the series of portraits shot by British photographer, Craig McDean, here.

Before one can fully comprehend what UNDERCOVER’s Jun Takahashi is doing for his Spring/Summer 2010 project, one would have to listen the story of Grace, an unidentified mysterious animal, UMA. The story of UMA doesn’t just involve a mythical creature, but three passionate men who left their lives behind in search of a fantasy. These three men are Dr. Bill who spent his life studying the fabled animal, Grace; an ardent young men Asano, and his fraternity brother, Hagen. In this story, Grace is a creature that seems like a hybrid of legendary Japanese cryptid, Tsuchinoko (meaning hammerspawn) that looks like a snake with a hammer-shaped head, and a dragon. In accordance with the tale, Team Gila created “Lullaby Of The Lamb” and the full story will be uncovered in e-MOOK UNDERCOVERISM, which will be dropping on Jan. 16 at UNDERCOVER stores and colette. Alongside the publication, a messenger bag from Dr. Bill’s laboratory, Light Laboratories, is gifted with purchase. The same logo created with lab instruments with a “G” in the middle for “Grace” found on the bag is also found on the eponymous collection previewed on e-MOOK UNDERCOVERISM. Get a first look and a special insight into “Grace” as well as everything going on with UNDERCOVER this season. via: Jun Takahashi

At the height of Starbucks‘ growth in the nineties, a new green mermaid sign was propped up everyday. Two decades and two CEOs later, Starbucks has evolved from a neighborhood coffee joint to a studied hallmark branding project; then, 2007 came about and it fell slightly out of favor as little cracks started to tarnish the economy. Now, Starbucks is looking for new footing in the world and a part of its reinvention project comes in securing a spot amongst the mom-and-pop-like neighborhood coffee joints it once was a part of. For residents of more artist and diverse neighborhoods, a Starbucks opening becomes an omen that their community is turning yuppie. In order to quell the suspicion and weariness towards corporate conglomerates steaming the residents’ milk and changing the atmospheric landscape of their community, Starbucks has decided to blend into its setting with redesigns. Under the leadership of Starbucks President of Global Development, Arthur Rubinfeld, the coffee giant sets out to revamp new stores that veer far and away from its cookie-cutter clutter of green and maroon splattered interior that remained constant through more than 40 countries.
A large part of the redesign comes from shedding the iconic green mermaid and other obvious branding. For the new Starbucks location on Seattle’s 15th Avenue, the company not just forwent the logo, but also the name. The new store is christened “Coffee & Tea”, and its rustic appearance of sturdy hardwood furniture and eclectic blend of furniture (bright red velvety couches reminiscent of the glorious early 20th century European mercantile set heavily against large oval table dressed with many seats, calling for strangers to share a spot and conversation) makes it almost unrecognizable as a Starbucks store, but just another coffee house on the block run by generations of the same family. Other new store locations with fresh designs include Roy Street Coffee and another spot at University Village. While the results of the reinventions are to be determined, the new strategy is set to unveil itself in other locations and overseas including Europe. So, keep an eye out for new Starbucks location to hit your neighborhood, and see if you are feeling the brand new “unStarbucks” serving your fancy no-whip-fat-free-vanilla-latte-with-a-dose-of-cinnammon. via: T Magazine
