If you stopped by Google‘s front page this morning, you noted a eerie image of skeletal silhouettes. No, its not the inner working of the search engine giant, though that would make a fascinating story, but its the company’s celebration of x-ray discovery, found and replicated by German physicist Wilhelm Conrad Rontgen on this day in 1895. He later won the 1901 Nobel Prize in Physics. Who says science can’t be cool?

For those residing in New York City, Club Monaco is almost as prevalent on the streets as Starbucks. But for those outside the city, the extension of the Ralph Lauren family purveying a classic palette of black and white and strong, timeless, office-appropriate classics, is not an easy find. In order to make the label more accessible, Club Monaco has been pushing for better online presence, and it includes an upcoming e-commerce launch. Along with the new e-commerce site, Club Monaco is getting a little up close and personal with its customers with the debut of a new blog, CM Culture Club.

The likes of social media and location-based service made a giant leap today as NASA Astronaut Douglas H. Wheelock, Commander of Expedition 25, made the first “check-in” from outer space on the popular social media and location-based platform foursquare. With assistance from upstart creative agency JESS3 and NASA, Commander Wheelock was able to check-in at the International Space Station, some 220 miles in orbit above Earth. In becoming the first human to ever check-in from space, Commander Wheelock (call sign “Astro Wheels“) unlocked a brand new foursquare badge – NASA Explorer. Check the video documented the very moment a fun history was made after the jump.

Think of it as Foursquare but with running. Nike Grid appeals to one of the two basest human instincts–gathering. To promote running culture for Fall/Winter 2010, Nike has not only been organizing night group runs, collaborations (with Jun Takahashi on Gyakusou International Running Association) but has also released a new online interactive application which turns running into a game. Nike Grid turns London into a game board with 48 check-in points, and urges all to run the whole city to unlock and collect badges as one laces up and runs through the city. Create a team, run with friends, run with your classmates, log in with Facebook and share your run which will start on October 22 at 6pm. Change up your Friday night schedule, give up that pint and get rid of that beer belly by running your way through the city. Don’t forget, no taking the bus, no taxi, no cheating. Cheaters will get points brutally taken off. Check out the video for more information.

This is when we suppose “Binging” can get more fun than “Googling”. If we think of Google as a mindless, automatic feeder of information at times irrelevant, Bing is making things interactive by making its users hunt for information, and not just within the cyber space with a keyboard and internet connection. The latest Bing project with entrepreneur-hip-hop-giant-personified, Jay-Z, gives the Jigga fans access pages from the rapper’s upcoming book, Decoded.

Chalk one up for popular sentiment! Just days after it unveiled the proposed new logo and an explanation on The Huffington Post about the change by its President, Marka Hansen, Gap decided to abandon its plan to change the clothier iconic blue box logo. While intention for the new logo, designed by New York creative agency Laird & Partners, was that of a forward-looking company. The result was anything but, with passionate outcry against it on all different outlets, including social medias. Finally, Gap relented the plans with an announcement on its Facebook page around 7:30 pm EST last evening followed by another personal statement by Marka Hansen. In the meantime, the blue box logo that we came to known well will stay put, at least for now.

If you have visited Gap’s website recently, or simply have been keeping up to date with the blogs and RSS feed, you probably have already seen the new Gap logo which is the talk of retail town at the moment. All-American affordable retailer Gap has decided to rebrand itself and quietly switch over from the old logo we had grown up with to a new one without announcement or a launch. While some have described the logo as a modern vintage take on the old and prevalent logo, some continue to speculate what this move means and what it can mean for the brand in the future. Whether you like the logo or not, join in and discuss.

Despite a dreary, wet Friday, Freshness’ office is abuzz with excitement when a few us received a mysterious email this morning. Sent from a generic email address, the email was a simple announcement that COMME des GARÇONS just created its official website. Indeed, the message was true after a few verification and confirmation, the venerable fashion label join the fray, finally. Loop in a continuously, the site is like a online viewing gallery, with collaborative works by artist Mondongo (2008), Quay Brothers (2009), and Ai Weiwei (of the Beijing Olympics Bird Nest Stadium fame) this year. Though thoroughly modern in their designs, it was said that Rei Kawakubo, Junya Watanabe and the rest of the CDG gang shun the Internet because of its irrepressible nature. Maybe that is about to change?
