Back in the 80s, Nike designer Tinker Hatfield was training in a gym when he observed that gym members were participating in not just one athletic activity but several activities. He watched as people shot hoops, lifted weights or played racquetball, then took an aerobics class-all in the same day. In between each activity they would stop to change their shoes. Clearly, one pair of athletic shoes wasn't serving their overall athletic needs.
