With just 5 days left, the 2008 Summer Olympic in Beijing will mark a great stride in the sport of BMX. A total of 24 women and 32 men will compete at the debut event in front of 15,000 spectators. It not only will mark the first time that an “extreme” sport takes center stage in the world arena. The event will be the testing ground for Nike’s BMX gears, including the Nike Dunk Gyrizo.

In coordinating color gradients of red and white, the Nike Dunk Gyrizo - Japan is set to match with Nike BMX uniform, created specifically for the Japanese riders by WTAPS creative director, Tetsu “Tet” Nishiyama. A mix of patent leather and imprinted with large oval rings at the rear half. The Nike Dunk Gyrizo - Japan is representation of the highly prized Koi fish. And similar to other Dunk Gyrizo, the laces are made of Kevlar composite, with metallic eyelets to ensure endurance on the course. Ankle strap and lace pockets to keep all the appendages away from the spokes. Rubber outsole along with thinner midsole equal comfort and flexibility. Lastly, the sneaker is 100% SPD compatible. In case you’re wondering, the name Gyrizo means “gears” in Greek.

One team that is poise to take home medal(s) is the Team USA with 2 of the top men’s BMX riders - Mike Day, Kyle Bennett, and Donny Robinson.  The 3 will be equip with a special tuned bike, a Nike jumpsuit with Aerographic zone venting and the blue/white Nike Dunk Gyrizo - USA.

As a homage to the pioneers that came before, Nike invited Bob Haro, the first superstar of the BMX culture, to create a one of the kind design.  What Haro came up with was a checkerboard patterns which hark back to the golden age of BMX. Given the fervor over Nike’s “Marty McFly” Hyperdunk release earlier this month, a very interesting auction is currently taking place on eBay. Offer from Profiles in History, an entertainment memorabilia seller in California. The Back to the Future II (2) Hoverboard was one of the few props created for the 1989 movie (and portion of 1990’s Back to the Future III (3)). According to Profiles in History, 2 types of the hoverboard props were created, a styrofoam-base and wood-base. While styrofoam-base props have deteriorated over the years, the wood-base props (which is the prop being offer) have lasted. With real metal appendages and ball-bearing loaded footpads that actually turn 360 degrees, the starting bid is at $30,000. For the 3rd representation for the US on Nike’s special Air Force 1 - 1WORLD Collection, it partnered with the multi-talented musician Ahmir Thompson, better known as ?uestlove (Questlove). Hailed from the city of brotherly love, Philadelphia, the drummer, DJ, producer, and founding member of the influential band, The Roots, of which ushered in a new form of hip-hop genre.

Working closely with Nike Sportswear Design Director, Jesse Leyva, ?uestlove (Questlove) created a blaring design green and red colorways. To further enhance its contrast, an additional elephant skin/concrete pattern was embossed on the green portion of the upper and mid-sole. The raucous graphic is by design an extension of ?uestlove’s larger-than-life personality, as the artist stated “I just wanted to start off with a very loud statement, a sneaker that sort of has 12 exclamation points behind it. Something that just screams “Rahhhhrr” so you know, this is an extension of my personality. The inside (of the shoe) is of me drumming. Yeah, inside art is very important to me. Even though you’re the only person that sees it from a consumer standpoint but, I sorta know you put a lot of work into it as a designer based on how your shoe is designed on the sole.”
