New York-based photographer/filmmaker 13th Witness, aka Timothy McGurr, was in Australia to ostensibly direct a music video for local band Gold Fields on their song “Holy No.” A teaser video had hinted at the intricacies of the project, and now a newly released behind-the-scenes featurette reveals multiple creative layers unfolding over a couple of day’ shooting in Melbourne, as well as the band’s hometown of Ballarat. In addition to the making-of video, the documentary footage doubles as a video lookbook for New Balance Australia‘s heritage lifestyle collection, which also features looks from Sydney clothing label Vanishing Elephant. Just when digital photography had almost fully shed the stigma of being a watered down form of traditional film photograhy, Instagram took hold of the Twitter world and shook things up again. So while some may claim that the medium is cheapening the art of photography through feaux-filters and the like, 13thWitness has gone in quite the opposite direction. Embracing the immediacy and accessibility of the platform, 13thWitness has cranked out InstaMatic’, a new book comprised entirely of photos taken via Instagram. Spanning 182 pages and coming in a beautiful hardback cover, the book comes as a testament to the power of new media and internet photography, and is available now from 13thWitness.

Be it friends, family, or perfect strangers on the street of New York. From backstage, on stage, or in the midst of bewildered audience. They could be celebrities, semi-famous, or just nobody, 13th Witness captured them all with his trusted Canon 5D Mark II. Engrossing narrative in the visual form, or as he tells it simply as “We tell stories, visually”, this video montage of works from 2010 featured subjects who are also friends, from John Mayer, Lupe Fiasco, Cypress Hill, to DJ Neil Armstrong, DJ A-Trak, and Steve Nash. Can not wait to see what he has in store for the new year.

With his storied images and recent video works with The Deftones and John Mayer, 13thWitness was recently asked to direct “Heirplane”, the song from In the Jaws of The Lords of Death, debut EP of Japanese Cartoon, the Indie-Post Punk band founded by Wasalu M. Jaco, better known by his stage name of Lupe Fiasco. Fashioned after the 80′s slasher horror films, the sequence was shot in the Catskill Mountains of New York with model Sarah Anne McSweeney (Married to The MOB fame) and actress Tiffany Archer as the starting focuses. Followed both leading roles were Graham Burris, Japanese Cartoon’s bassist, Erik Hammer, guitarist for the band, and Lupe Fiasco himself. With help from seasoned video stylist Josh Madden, who worked on various projects from Good Charlotte music video to Kangol ads. The video panned in on the campfire scene, ensued by a chase sequence in the woods, and finalized at the iconic West Taghkanic diner. Expressively, the video conveys a message of action, involvement, and inclusion of today’s youth culture, which sometimes could be of fringe of mainstream ideals. Otherwise, the progression of mainstream culture in the near future would grind to a stop. Lupe Fiasco x Japanese Cartoon – “Heirplane”, presented by 13thWitness. Enjoy!

Last week, New York City was overrun by mile-long legs, editors in killer heels, men in glossy, three-piece suits and smart tortoiseshell glasses, and they have all congregated at the new home of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York City at Lincoln Center. Freshness was jetting about town bringing everyone the first peek at what’s to come from Spring/Summer 2011 from the strong and beloved like Duckie Brown and Simon Spurr, and the loud and ostentatious Jeremy Scott, whom we had scored a quick backstage Q&A session with. Also, one of industrial design’s baddest, Marc Newson, has opened his Transport exhibition at the Gagosian Gallery in Chelsea, and we dropped by for a media preview to check out the boat, the jets, and the spaceship. Meanwhile, Nike geared up for the exhibition as well and has re-released its collaborative Nike Zvezdocheka with Marc Newson at 21 Mercer.

Photographer 13th Witness has just opened his solo exhibition at Lower East Side’s Reed Space, and the opening event attracted the fashionable, the artistic and the cool to gather around tonight, taking a quick break from New York Fashion Week festivities. The exhibition starting tonight will run through the end of September, and it features recent works by the photographer and artist extraordinaire. A series of dreamy images sequenced the walls of the space, and at the event, t-shirts featuring 13th Witness’ work and postcards were available for purchase, aside from the exhibited works. Artists John Mayer and Lupe Fiasco both turned up at the event for support, and Mayer was decked out with his own camera, snapping shots of the crowd. Check out the recap from the event which is still going on at Reed Space if you can make it!

There is something to be say about 13th Witness‘ images though we don’t think words can convey it. Maybe its his methodology, those dangerous routine of cycling along side his subjects, disregarding oncoming traffics. Or maybe its his raw aesthetics, which are easily understood by urbanites everywhere. Whatever the “it” might be, there is no denying the talents of Tim McGurr, the mastermind behind 13th Witness. For those who haven’t view McGurr’s works up close, next Monday, September 13th, would be your chance as Jeff Staple’s storefront, Reed Space, opens the 13th Witness Exhibition. Featuring all new images from McGurr, the extensive display include new works never shown in public. In the meantime, Jeff Staple sat down with McGurr for a conversation in his 1-2-1 video series. The exhibition is set to be on display till September 30th.

If you think that riding through traffic on a brake-less fixed gear bicycle is dangerous, then riding through traffic on a brake-less BMX would be absolutely inconceivably dangerous. However, 13th Witness teamed up with Nigel Sylvester on a fast ride around the city, for street riding at its best. Dodging people, other riders and cars, the speedy video captures the essence of the streets. Tricks utilizing the street terrain have been thrown in, and the video showcases what Sylvester does best on two wheels. Editing is tight as you would expect from 13th Witness and it is definitely worthwhile for five minutes of your busy life.
