Somewhere in there, among the drove of reporters from every conceivable media and formats, is Edison Chen. Can you find him?
Finally, the CLOT x Disney retail concept known as Man Is In The Forest opened its door in Taipei City in the midst of fans and supporters over the weekend. Situated in the trendy Xinyi District and near the once tallest building in the world, Taipei 101, the new store front featured a sparse layout designed by Makoto Azuma. Best known for his landscape creations, especially those done with fellow designer Kazuki Kuraishi, Azuma cultivated the store’s unique interior, quite literally. With special sponge-like planting blocks developed by Japan’s Suntory Midorie, Azuma nurtured more than 10 species of horticultural flora into a shape most identifiable with Disney – Mickey Mouse’s ears.
Derived from a pivotal juncture in Disney‘s animated classic Bambi, Man Is In The Forest is a distinctive take by CLOT‘s Edison Chen, Kevin Poon, along with Disney’s Ben Yue, on the intuitive relationship we all have with Disney animations. A fact especially discernible within the many other creative types involved in this project, including X-Large, MEDICOM TOY, SSUR, PAM, Bounty Hunter, Vanquish, 84/74 Lab, and more… Besides as a temporary storefront that will be offering limited edition items from the said group of designers. The grand opening, with Edison Chen as host, marked the mid-point of Traveling Mickey Charity Auction, where fans can bid on one-of-the-kind Mickey Mouse vinyl set. Half of the auction’s proceeds, along with certain merchandise sales from the store, will benefit local youth programs aimed creative development.

Streetwear aficionados have seen enough Disney collaborations limited to images of Mickey’s smiling mug on hoodies and tees that it’ll take something really new to grab our attention. Having said that, we’ll admit a Minnie Mouse inspired women’s shoe from VANS that looks more fuzzy slipper than sneaker fits the bill. It should be noted, that comparison more accurately describes the Slip-On model than the other shoe in the pack, a Sk8-Hi similarly done up in brown fur, with cream fur lining and pink foxing wrapped around an off-white white midsole. The Sk8-Hi also comes with pink polka dot laces, presumably inspired by the bow that Minne Mouse wears atop her head. Both models are scheduled to release on October 7th in Japan only. via: Espionagekicks

Disney and adidas, iconic brands recognized the world over, have joined forces on a pair of adidas Originals adi-Rise. Shaking off any cobwebs that might have developed at either of the longstanding institutions, team Trefoil and Mickey Inc. have created an adi-Rise model that’s boldly designed and dripping with attitude. The upper is built with gleaming black patent leather at the toe, as well as the forefoot and heel straps, while Mickey Mouse’s visage bears an angrily defiant expression on the tongue. At the heel, and also embossed to form three stripes at the quarter panel, are Xs formed by Mickey’s instantly recognizable hands and feet. Bright red accents provide a finishing flourish. The shoes are available starting September 1st at select retailers like Mr. R Sports in Miami.

Cycling culture is still big in Japan and XLarge have initiated a triple brand project with W-BASE and Disney to entice cyclists. Rather than opting for Mickey Mouse, the t-shirt graphics show Donald and Goofy riding a bicycle in their own unique manner. There are three colorways made of each design and the Charcoal body version will be sold exclusively at W-BASE. The XLarge version will be stocking the Black and White t-shirts with full color prints of the same graphic. All of the t-shirts are scheduled for release this Friday, September 2nd at XLarge stores in Japan and W-BASE retail store.

A simple smiling face of the lovable Disney characters grace the front panels of the New Era 59FIFTY caps in their latest collaboration collection. Each character is given a single highlight color and there are six characters in total, Minnie, Donald, Goofy, Pluto, Mary and Mickey Mouse featured twice in a different angle. Black crown is matched by highlight colors on the under visor as well as embroidery threads and button on top. All of the caps are currently available at Cap Collector One in Tokyo and luckily their online store accepts international orders for those outside of Japan.

Quite a solid newsweek, including a slew of notable stories in fashion, sneakers, art, business, and technology. First up is the AW2011 movie from White Mountaineering, which shows that for the coming season, the label is taking some of it’s strongest suits, and giving them season-appropriate updates. And a potentially huge win for retailer Karmaloop was announced this week too: that Pharrell Williams will take the role of Creative Director at the retailer’s Karmaloop TV media channel. And in a week filled with sneaker news, one takeaway story might be the release of a new colorway of the Swizz Beatz-designed Kamikaze by Reebok, which sold out in 10 minutes. Another sneaker designer (with a bit more pedigree) was featured in video trailer this week; Mark Ong (SBTG) is the subject of a forthcoming video done by film crew Vita Brevis. Supreme released a new model of sunglasses this week, the Alton, with vague resemblance to the slightly horn-rimmed frames of Kurt Cobain circa early 1990′s. This week also saw the second release in the boundary-pushing collaboration between BAPE and Daiwa, plus the first event held to commemorate the 30th anniversary of seminal skateboard magazine Thrasher, which included new art by Neckface. And in technology news, Samsung released it’s Chromebook this week – providing a solid consumer product platform for Google’s bid for dominance in the operating system wars. Finally, a classic collaboration, involving some usual suspects: the first drop in the PHANTASIA capsule, done by CLOT, PHANTACi, and Disney, was released this week, showing shamelessly playful designs. Check out details on all of these stories after the jump.

Suave and unapproachable, with portrayals by countless tabloids, at home and abroad, it is hard to think of Edison Chen as otherwise. The truth is the fictitious profile by rumor starved beat reporters is nothing like the real Edison Chen, who sometimes go by the acronym EDC. It is true that he is a celebrity in a multitude of mediums. The part time actor, occasional crooner peruses all avenues of creativeness, like majority of his counterparts in the enfolded world of stardom. So what is different about what some in the gossip world named “The Boy Wonder”? The answer is CLOT – an affiliation of retail spaces, creative workshop, and fashion label EDC runs with friend Kevin Poon. Need another facet most dubious reporting will not highlight? EDC oversee all aspects of CLOT’s operation, in person with Poon and other managers. Still need one more rebuttal? The self-mocking nature of Chen’s design concepts, especially for the new Spring/Summer 2011 season, all are conceptually solid but with a humorous, silly twist, of all will see in our brief conversation with the man himself.
