Tomokazu Matsuyama x Evisu 20th Anniversary Make The Rules Project | Behind The Scenes Look

Its been quite a hectic year for Japanese artist Tomokazu Matsuyama, or simply known as Matzu among his friends. After a succession of exhibitions, the Brooklyn-based painter ended the year with a new collaboration, this time with denim giant Evisu in celebrating the label’s 20th anniversary. Billed as “Make The Rules” project, created the “-Kirin” based on the mythical dragon-like creature and a sign of prosperity. A dash of East in subject and a hint of West in its acrylic execution, the painting will be a precursor to the limited x denim collection, set to launch in Fall and Winter of 2012. Meanwhile, is getting ready for a solo exhibition at Katzen Arts Center in American University next March. That will be follow by one in San Francisco’ Frey Norris Gallery in May and Los Angeles’ Mark Moore Gallery in September.

INSA x Evisu Button Down, Back Up

In celebrating their 20th anniversary, Japanese denim brand Evisu initiated the Make the Rules art project to showcase their famous denim as a medium for artists. One of the artists to participate in this project is London based graffiti and contemporary artist INSA. The finished piece is entitled Button Down, Back Up, which is a playsuit crafted from selvedge denim. INSA also hand printed his signature Graffiti Fetish patterns on the denim using bleach, accenting the feminine curves of the piece. In an effort to showcase his latest piece effectively, a custom designed metal mannequin was hand forged and welded to provide a rigid framework. Heart shaped oak base holds it all together and this piece is scheduled to be displayed at Make the Rules exhibitions in Evisu stores and parties worldwide.

Evisu Spring/Summer 2009 Preview

Previewed during the Milan Fashion Week for Men’s Ready to Wear, Evisu showcased its Spring/Summer 2009 collection for the Deluxe and Hertiage line. The design concept for 2009 borrowed heavily on historical context of East meets West. While most knew of Commodore Matthew Perry’s historical to Japan in 1852, the first of such scale by a foreign fleet in Japanese history at the time. A few could recall Kanrin Maru, the first Japanese sailing vessel to visit the United State in 1860. Inspired by the story, designers Evisu Deluxe took details from Japanese naval traditions, such as wide-leg cuffed pants and patch pockets, with updated silhouettes plus modern refinements. The fabrics all came from the Takisada Mills in Osaka, Japan, one with a 144-year history .

For the Evisu Heritage line, the key word is Tairyouki, or translated as big fish flag. Traditionally used by Japanese fishermen as a marker for bountiful catch, these brightly colored flags are still in use today as sign of good fortune. The same vibrant colorways can be found on the 2009 Heritage line as well.

Of course, one can’t forget Evisu’s extensive study on the art of denim manufacturing. It is no different in 2009 as the company introduce new selvage denims, including “No 13 LEFT”, accurate reproduction based on the earliest denim collection, from 1910 and onward, by Lee of USA

While visiting the DC Shoes booth at the Blue Tradeshow two weeks back I bumped into an old friend, Ioana who managed Recon when it was on Eldridge Street. She’s now at and along with Chad the Marketing Manager showed me a few things from the ’s Spring 08 line. After growing at a fast pace the past few years and loosing focus, the company is going back to its roots and concentrating on its core business, denim, this upcoming Spring. The bag collection is pretty dope, they are all made with selvedge denim.
