On paper, the team-up of of NEIGHBORHOOD and MAD may not make very much sense. One is a no-frills Japanese label obsessed with the hard edged imagery spewing from the subculture of motorcycles, the other is a lighthearted magazine of fun-poking aimed at every nook and cranny in pop culture. So despite the apparent disparity in their respective mission statements, the two are getting together for a small capsule collection. The pieces included of course bear the image of Alfred E. Neuman, MAD’s pranskter mascot and long time inhabitant of t-shirts. The drop isn’t without the NEIGHBORHOOD influence though, as the team applies a black and white touch for an interesting take on the buoyant imagery from MAD’s catalog. Japan’s Neighborhood has brought back its popular Strabler Rider Jacket from 2009. Dubbed the Strabler 2, this reissue is updated with a number of improvements, the most significant of which is the new material construction: soft lamb leather provides increased comfort and an interesting contrast to the jacket’s rugged aesthetic. Additional details include the “D pocket” on the left side, a nod to ’40s-era vintage riders, as well as the quilted woodland camouflage lining, evocative of the Vietnam Era that the brand’s “No Shelter” collection is built around. Quilted reinforcement at the elbows and adjustable waist tabs finish the look. The Neighborhood Strabler 2 Leather Jacket is available now at Canada’s HAVEN.

Long time friends, Shinsuke Takizawa and Tokyo based stylist/designer Keisuke Baba has partnered up on several pieces for the NEIGHBORHOOD Fall/Winter 2011 collection. One of the stand out pieces of the collaboration is this NEIGHBORHOOD x ENGLATILOR by GB NHET N-2B Jacket. Retaining the original N-2B military jacket silhouette, the pair proceeded to add leather panels and reflective tapes on the chest, shoulder, back and sleeves, modernizing the exterior. Brown boa material is used for the inner lining on the collar and additional draw string makes sure heat stays on the inside of the jacket. This jacket is currently in stock at UNION in Los Angeles through their retail store and online store.

As Japanese design Noriaki Endo begins the unenviable task of closing his influential Devilock brand. “Tributes” are coming in as gestures of thanks, including Shinsuke Takizawa of NEIGHBORHOOD who added a special edition selvedge denim to Devilock’s final collection. In slightly washed colorway, the commemorative edition also features leather rear pocket and patches in black, symbolic to Devilock’s influence. Limited in availability starting next month, the Devilock x NEIGHBORHOOD Special Edition Selvedge Denim is now available for pre-order on ZOZOTOWN shopping network.

Japan’s NEIGHBORHOOD is a label that’s very much of the moment, but it’s no secret the brand regularly looks to the past for inspiration. That’s certainly the case with their new Fall/Winter collection, “Gimme Shelter,” a title borrowed from the lead track off the Rolling Stones’ 1969 album Let It Bleed. Appropriately, the collection is influenced by the 1960s Vietnam era, blending military notes with outlaw biker motifs, most obviously seen in the tees and knits. Denim in rigid and washed styles, as well as two woven shirts, complete the assortment. Canada’s HAVEN has just received their first shipment of NEIGHBORHOOD’s fall season; the goods are up on their webstore now.
