visvim reflected on its own Japanese culture for influence this season, naming the Spring/Summer 2012 collection Japanism. As many would know, Japanese culture is rich in traditional crafts and ‘sashiko’ is one of the traditional methods of decorating garments. Ordinarily, sashiko is applied to cotton fabrics, yet visvim had decided to give it a modern twist by decorating the suede upper of the Flynt Hi sneakers. The hand stitched pattern works perfectly with the soft appearance of the footwear, giving it a personality. Instead of the usual woven labels, these sneakers feature a printed leather tag on the tongue. Four colorways are available in black, green, navy, and blue at visvim stockists around the world.

As a new month starts, SOPHNET. is preparing to drop new items from the Spring/Summer 2012 collection. There will be three pieces which will be launching this coming Friday, February 3rd 2012 and it includes FSF Light Weight Down Vest, Stretch Summer Wool 3/4 Low Waist Slacks and 23L Ballistic backpack made in conjunction with visvim. Both the down vest and wool slacks will be a great item for the coming transition period, where temperatures fluctuate unexpectedly from cool to warm. The first two items will be available from normal SOPHNET. outlets in Japan and around the world, however the Ballistic backpack is limited to SOPH. and Isetan Men’s stores in Tokyo and Osaka.

Hiroki Nakamura explained that this season’s collection was in the middle of product development and manufacturing when the tragic earthquake and tsunami hit Japan in March last year. Perhaps it was fate that Nakamura chose to reflect the traditional cultures from Japan for the visvim Spring/Summer 2012 collection. Titled Japanism, the collection takes reference from Japanese symbolism and traditional items such as Geta and Ashida sandals. As coincidence would have it, one of the key textile used in this collection comes from a small town of Showa in the Fukushima prefecture. The Choma fabric had been produced in this town for over 600 years, a long heritage which has been protected and preserved by its craftsman. This hand woven fabric was used on the Provenance Blazer, which can be seen styled with a Sashiko T-Shirt and Epoch Stole below.
