droog New York - Grand Opening
Started in 1993 when Renny Ramakers and Gijs Bakker exhibited about a dozen Dutch designers at the perennial Milan Furniture Fair, the Amsterdam-base design collective known as droog (which means "dry" in Dutch) just opened its newest gallery/retail space last evening. Hundreds of well-wishers, some from as far as Japan, made the rounds through the new store, droog's first in North America.
Situated at the heart of SoHo district, the retail space is bi-level with around 5,000 square-feet of display space. An early adopter of a concept where blurring of distinctions between a retailer and exhibition space occurs, the new droog location, like its branches in Amsterdam and Tokyo, offers a constant rotation of designed goods. With the exception of its cavernous space, flatiron columns, and raw pipe works, everything in the store is for sale, including the counter top holding the cash/wrap area. The store is also one of the few retailers to sell imaginative items such as Carbon Fibre Cupboard by Bar Warmoeshkerken and Mario Minale's Life-size LEGO Chair.
