One of Nike's most innovative sneakers, Air Max was first introduced in 1987, catering specifically to runners.  As the iconic designer Tinker Hatfield stated, The original goal was to put a shoe out there that had more cushioning than anything else previously made. The challenge became: how do we let runners and the general public see the Air Sole at work." In response, Hatfield and the design team at Nike constructed the new shoe around the largest Nike Air Sole unit to date.  Then they left a portion of the unit visible a revolutionary and controversial move at the time.

To highlight the evolution of the Air Max 1 and the Air Maxim 1 some 22 years later, Nike Sportswear is bring back the Air Max 1 in both of its original colorways Sports Red and Blue, as part of its Fall 2009 Collection.  Both will be available at selected retailers around the world starting next month.
