Still pondering over the dilemma of holiday gifting? For those who are looking for something that is less common and interesting for their beloved friends and family, New York City's Felissimo Design House is bringing a slice of Japan to the city in a new pop-up store named Japan Brand NYC. Not just your average slice of Japan, Japan Brand NYC actually offers a carefully curated selection of products from over 400 artisans and 27 regions in Japan, most of which are unavailable anywhere else in the United States. Think one-of-a-kind textiles, accessories for your cozy abode, stationary, cookware and even sake and other delectable items for your palate.
Among the collection of items, there is a limited edition series of chess set crafted from lacquer, silver plating and gold leafs designed by media artist, Alexander Gelman, and produced by Japanese artisans. Alexander Gelman is not only the founder of Globally Local Media which aims to promote Japanese culture, but his work have also resided in the world's top museums such as MoMA, the Smithsonian and Bibliotheque. He has also collaborated with renowned brands in the world such as Nike, Target, Apple, and Warp Records. Another interesting tidbit about Gelman, he is possibly the second most popular man after President Obama in Japan. The man's latest literary venture as featured in the book Post Global is currently the number two bestseller Japan, right after the book about president Obama.
Other than the chest set that takes a painstaking ten months to create and run for $55,000, Gelman has also created an unique lacquer bicycle built from the highest-grade components selected from Japan's leading bicycle manufacturer, Shimano. The bicycle will be on display at Felissimo as a part of the designer's foray into lacquer ware. Not just your average retail store, Japan Brand NYC is more like a community promoting Japanese craftsmanship and culture as there will be a series of public events held for the duration of the store's opening. The store is up and running starting from yesterday and will run through Dec. 24. Check out the list of activities open to public (many of which involve tasting Japanese delicacies and sake) and pick out some gifts while you are at it. Japan Brand NYC
