Madras has been a utilitarian summer staple associated with sweltering tropical heat since its creation (especially since the fabric is named after the former English name of Chennai, India). Madras is often the staple island vacation gear but has been reinvented in the recent years and adopted into the runway to earn a more contemporary edge. Purveyor of French effortless cool, A.P.C., has taken on the Madras project as well for Spring/Summer 2010, and will be releasing the lightweight check cotton pieces in short-sleeved button downs, drawstring shorts and totes. The pieces adopt a more subtle colorway this season by matching navy to maroon, and creating a brighter shade with navy and orange. Throw the madras over a pair of lightweight khakis or sport a clean white tee over the shorts and feel instantly uplifted this season even if a vacation is not in order. images via: HB
