One of the golden rules of styling is that accessories update basics into relevant looks, but this is often contested by dressing purists. However, adidas OriginalsA.039 Spring/Summer 2010 advertorial shoot styled by Cynthia Lawrence-John (who also styled Lady Gaga, Lady Sovereign and Ladyhawke), shot by Joost Vanderbrug (worked with Jean Paul Gaultier, Levi's and Volt) and created in conjunction with British fashion magazine, Volt, may change minds about taking sporty basics to the next level.
The A.039 line was created with simplicity in mind. Paying homage to adidas Originals' casual and understated heritage (the line is named after the internal reference code for adidas Originals blue), the line is free of ostentatious branding as we are used to seeing on adidas Originals' iconic tracksuit combos and stays youthfully updated with creative touches in silhouettes and shades. The collection delivers a fine balance between elegance and youthful zest with contemporary takes on classics. Tailored pleated trousers are remade in casual fabric and lighter shades, classic double pocket work shirts are kept fitted yet deliberately crinkled and ribber boat-neck sweaters enjoy a generous cut that is slightly reminiscent of the eighties. Sure the pieces stay quite simple in terms of concept (albeit the little adidas twists here and there), but as the shoot goes, all pieces enjoy new lives with daring accessories. a wild brooch with frills and feathers lend a genteel edge to a powder blue bomber, and a cartoon-y bee-shaped brooch adds a playful touch to the classic plaid. Pins, opulent chunky gold necklaces and takes the classic polo shirt and work shirt to a whole new level.
Another item worth noting in the collection are the high-top sneakers worn with jeans cuffed or tucked in. Instead of the usual round of flat laces, the new A.039 high top comes with broad flat laces that are reminiscent of elastic bands, adding an interesting contrast in silhouette to the otherwise clean white sneakers.
