It is funny how clothes take on a functional spin and seem to operate outside the conceivable norms of fashion when they actually are meant to be functional. For instance, snowboarding jackets-- warmth, resistance to everything from wind to water, snow and grime, and flexibility take precedence to say, an obscure fashion trend as spotted on the runway. As such, there is a beauty in the functionality and timelessness of these clothing. They translate a lifestyle, and lifestyle-- don't go out of style. Residing quietly, just a few blocks from the easily-bordering-on-pain-in-the-neck bustle of Broadway and Canal Street, tucked into the serene block on Crosby Street, is New York City surf shop, SATURDAYS.
For a while now, the shop has not only been the purveyor of surf and skate goods, it also makes quite a mean cup of joe. This season, the owners of SATURDAYS, Morgan Collett, Josh Rosen and Colin Tunstall have decided to take their passion for surf and the city one step further, launching its first capsule menswear collection. This collection featuring 11 timeless pieces that will segue from surf to street with nothing but a breezy ease is a sartorial reflection of the owners' lifestyle, their appreciation and love for the city, surfing, culture, traveling and everything Saturdays.
The collection is easy wearing, and translates the insouciant and relaxed attitude of the guys who hang ten quite perfectly into clothes. Of course, as with any surf collection, board shorts are a must, and the Saturdays folks rendered them quite simply in navy, white and grey. The quick dry nylon shorts hit mid-thigh, a more sophisticated and mature (also vintage) silhouette than the baggy ones that hangs below the knees. To top off the shorts, gorgeous azure Japanese cotton striped button downs, hooded pullover knits and logo tees and tanks complete the abbreviated collection that will work this summer, the next, and the one after this.
