We walked on them, drove over them, even complained about them as hazards. But the stark reality is that without the lowly manhole covers, our city streets would be impassible, the utilities which run the city would laid bare to the elements. To shed some light on these indispensable urban infrastructures, the City of Milan with Metroweb of Italy co-curated OVER THE UNDER, an exhibition series that include manhole covers created by some of the world's most prominent artists. In its second rendition, the curation team asked 5 artists - The London Police, Shepard Fairey (OBEY), Space Invader, I RENDER and Flying Fortress, to design 4 unique cover art. The collection will then be use as actual manhole covers (or tombini) across Milan. All 20 designs will be unveil this Thursday, November 18th, and be permanently in place as part of Milan's streetscape till December 2011. via: FRESHNGOOD
