A model life cycle of a quick, light car: It becomes a favorite of tinkerers, tuners, and weekend racers. Then those racers grow up, or they get copied, and before long, the quick, light car becomes gets weighed down with bells, whistles, more bells, seat-back DVD players for kids, etc. And the original fans move on. Sometimes they get a second chance though, and that is the case with Audi's A3. As the S4 has evolved, the A3 is taking it's place as the Audi tuner's choice. Of course, US-based fans have long clamored for an S version of the car, and while they don't yet have it, they do have a new hatchback in Audi's 3 series to lust after - the RS3, which has been announced for a 2012 release in Europe. For power, the car borrows the same turbocharged 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine used in the TT-RS, providing 335 hp, and a peppy 332 lb ft of torque. Transmission is a seven-speed S-Tronic system which enables a 0-100 km/h time of 4.6 seconds, and an electronically limited 250 km/h (155 mph). The burn rate for all this torque is a respectable 25.85 mpg. The interior is standard Audi RS - fans of previous RS Audis will not be surprised. Look for European tuners to take this one to the next level in the future, and we'll see how it compares to similarly sized BMW M Series coupes.
