Another busy week, with Spring collections from all over the globe, A-list parties, art events, audacious cars, and of course, lots of sneakers. First off in the summary of the week's news is a look at the new BAPE store in Causeway Bay. As with BAPE flagship stores, the build out was done by Wonderwall, ensuring a highly conceptual retail shrine that will catch the eyes of BAPE fans and retail scientists alike. Next up is a look at the Autumn/Winter 2011 collection from fellow Japanese streetwear label PHENOMENON. Those who have been tracking the label's aesthetic trajectory in recent seasons will not be surprised by the amount of flamboyance, which is both whimsical and dark. Nike, behind dozens of headlines this week, released new options for customizing the Air Max 90 and 95 at the iD Studio, and related, the Air Mett 90 video that is making wide internet rounds. And from the Jordan camp came the official unveiling of the Jordan Fly Wade, the Dwayne Wade signature sneaker that channels classic Jordan lines into a thoroughly modern shoe. Another of Nike Basketball's marquis stars, LeBron James, debuted his cartoon series this week too, with episode 1 of The LeBrons. A sneaker story of a different type comes from the partnership between Canon and SBTG; the collaboration has produced nice camera accessories, but the best part is a video that offers a look at the creative process and inspirations that have made Mark Ong such a deeply respected figure in sneaker culture. We also covered some of the events being held by Puma and UNDFTD, to celebrate the Undefeated x Puma Clyde "Stripe Off." And finally, the automotive world is prepping for the opportunity to showcase to an exploding market in China, at Auto Shanghai 2011; one interesting offering is from BMW - a "Security Plus" edition of the X5. Check out all of these stories after the jump.
BAPE Store Hong Kong I.T Hysan One Store Preview
The opening of a new BAPE store is always news in the streetwear world, but this is also noteworthy for connoisseurs of interior design; as with previous BAPE flagship retail locations, the new Causeway Bay store was conceived and created by Masamichi Katayama, of Wonderwall. Such stores aren't cheap to build either, a strong signal from new BAPE parent company I.T. Limited.
PHENOMENON Autumn/Winter 2011-12 Collection Lookbook
Those who have been tracking the creative trajectory at PHENOMENON will not be surprised at the amount of flamboyance in the Fall/Winter 2011 collection from the Japanese streetwear label. The influences are both dark and whimsical, and while some of these pieces will definitely turn heads even in Harajuku, the collection doesn't come off as cosplay clothing.
Nike iD Studio Spring 2011 Design Options
Nike iD introduced new customization options this week for two sneakerhead favorites: the Air Max 90 and Air Max 95. Fans now have a whole new set of possible color and material combinations for both shoes, including a new snakeskin option and many bright Spring colors.
Nike Air Mett 90 (Air "Meat" 90) | Video
To commemorate the second issue of Sneaker Freaker Germany, boutique The Good Will Out created a meat-based homage to the Air Max 90. Butchers Beef Brothers created a massive piece of food art, which was served up at an event at the boutique, and the video covering the project has been making wide internet rounds.
Jordan Fly Wade Officially Unveiled
Dwayne Wade has been serving as a spokesman for the AJ 2011, but now the Miami Heat player has his own signature model basketball sneaker under the Jordan brand. The just released Jordan Fly Wade is one of the most interesting Jordan pro models in quite some time; it rather effortlessly blends both classic Jordan design cues along with the most high tech materials and construction methods available, in a shoe that weighs less than 13 ounces - the lightest in the entire Jordan lineup.
UNDFTD x PUMA Clyde | Launch Events
The Undefeated x Puma Clyde "Stripe Off" sneaker collection was the reason for several events we covered this week. Today, from 12 to 6pm, Undftd La Brea will be hosting a launch event, with an East Coast counterpart taking place at Stussy NYC, from 12 to 2pm. And earlier in the week, we provided a recap of the launch party that also took place in New York, which featured performances by DJ Scratch, Kid Capri, Kenny Dope, Prince Language, DJ Spinna and DJ Getlive!
LeBron James Presents The LeBrons Animated Series: The Lion | Episode 1
LeBron James is a well known fan of Seth MacFarlane's Family Guy series, and we've covered the cameo by James in the MacFarlane cartoon "Eight Things You Never Hear." This week, episode one of The LeBrons debuted, on the show's Youtube channel. LeBron's corporate relationships are visible throughout the episode; characters are wearing Nike apparel, using HP products, listening to Beats by Dre headphones and using Bing for web searches.
Canon x SBTG Feature | Video
The collaboration between Canon and SBTG has produced some nice photography accessories, but the best thing about the partnership is the video the project has produced, which offers some insight into the creative process and motivations of Mark Ong. Canon, using it's own 5D Mark II camera, captures Ong, better known as the sneaker customizer SBTG, in his studio, surrounded by his examples of past work and inspirations. The video gives a great background to a man who has earned a huge amount of respect in the sneaker world.
BMW X5 Security Plus Class 6 Armored Vehicle
Ahead of Auto Shanghai 2011, BMW is offering a look at an armored and secured X5 SUV. The vehicle effectively serves as social commentary; the luxury carmaker is clearly bearish on securing a stake in the enormous Chinese market, while highlighting the disparity of wealth that makes such security a desirable option. The X5 Security Plus sits in the middle range of the security options offered by the German automaker, and all cynicism aside, it's a pretty cool vehicle.
