The future of intra-airport transportation is here, and they are automated pod cars. Found at Terminal 5 of London's Heathrow Airport, the electric pods ferry passengers between the terminal and two business parking lots. The roaming automatons lack an accelerator or steering wheel, traveling instead along dedicated guideways at a maximum speed of 25 mph. Seating capacity is four passengers and baggage. A total of 22 pods have traveled over 2.4 miles of track every weekday since April, carrying nearly 800 passengers each day. And now ULTra, the company that produced the pods, is looking to promote their automated guideway technology to customers in North America. A look at their website reveals they are currently evaluating the pod system for sites throughout the U.S., including San Jose airport in Northern California. Would you like to see these pods at your local airport or transportation hub?
