A stop-motion short film by director Spike Jonze and designer Olympia Le-Tan, entitled Mourir Aupres de Toi (To Die by Your Side), tells the tragicomic story of love lost and reclaimed. The setting: Parisian bookstore Shakespeare and Company after it's shut down for the day. The players: cut-out felt characters from the covers of two very recognizable titles. The story is a classic boy meets girl, boy loses girl tale with a twist. The project came about when Jonze asked Le-Tan for embroidery inspired by The Catcher in the Rye. She agreed, but only in exchange for a film. The two wrote the script over a six-month period and enlisted French filmmaker Simon Cahn to co-direct. The result is an exceptional storytelling achievement, involving a painstaking filming process that incorporated 3,000 pieces of felt that Le-Tan cut by hand. Go to NOWNESS to take in the video.
