In a daft publicity move, Nike SB was able to get a pair of its Elevated Guinness Dunk High onto the hands of Conan O'Brien. Though the star of late night talk show and one of the most visible entertainer of Irish heritage was all smile upon receiving the free kicks (and a well-designed facsimile of the Guinness stout). It was also Nike's latest ploy to remedy a mistake. It all stemmed from its Nike SB Dunk Low Pro Quickstrike "Black & Tan", April's special release to celebrate Saint Patrick's Day and that most famous Irish beverage. Unbeknown to Nike however, "Black & Tan" was not a description of an alcoholic beverage on the Emerald Isle, but a nickname for Royal Irish Constabulary Reserve Force, a paramilitary force known for its atrocities during the Irish War of Independence. As consolation, Nike wasn't the first to make the mistake. Back in March 2006, ice cream maker Ben & Jerry's landed in hot water when it named its special Saint Patrick's Day flavor Black & Tan as well.
