A pastel version of "The Scream" by Norwegian artist Edvard Munch was sold at Sotheby's auction house in New York Wednesday night for a staggering $119.9 million, setting a new world record for an artwork sold at auction. (The previous record holder had been Picasso's "Nude, Green Leaves, and Bust," fetching $106.5 million two years ago.) The piece was one of four versions of "The Scream," and the only one in the possession of a private collector. It was sold by Norwegian businessman Petter Olsen, whose father was a friend and patron of the artist. The other three versions are displayed in museums in Norway. The auction itself took all of twelve minutes, with the anonymous buyer putting in his winning bid over the phone.
