The pockets of beauty and hope are slowly overcoming the wake of destruction caused by Hurricane Katrina when it hit New Orleans in 2005. Contributing their fair share is a group of 21 of the world's top architects who are working with Brad Pitt's Make It Right Foundation to build safe, sustainable, and affordable homes in the city's Lower Ninth Ward. This past weekend, the latest home to be finished is one designed by Frank Gehry, which he designed as a four bedroom, three bathroom duplex with a rooftop terrace and covered porch areas. Gehry sought to design a home that reflected the history, vernacular, and climate of New Orleans, but don't worry, the owners themselves selected the pink-and-lilac exterior themselves. The house also features hardwood floors throughout and an open floor plan complete with beautiful and energy efficient finishing. Pitt's foundation is working to build 150 homes in the area, asking buyers only for what they can afford to pay, which comes to an average of about $150,000 for a single-family home and $200,000 for a duplex.
