According to Wilson Smith, the designer behind the Nike Air More Uptempo, the mid-'90s were "a bigger than-life-time." That sense of maximalism was the driving force behind the creation of the shoe, the latest subject of Nike Basketball's "20 Designs That Changed the Game" retrospective. In creating the Nike Air More Uptempo, Smith took a page from the world of graffiti and pop art, applying "AIR" in giant letters on the medial side of the shoe to advertise the Nike Air that extended from the toe to the heel. The abundant cushioning and lockdown support made the shoe ideal for the vertical player, making it the weapon of choice for Scottie Pippen.
