At first blush, a bicycle made out of cardboard would seem to indicate an arts and crafts project or a green-inspired art installation. Thanks to bike enthusiast Izhar Gafni, the cardboard bicycle is a fully realized and fully functional mode of transportation, able to support 485 lbs. and weatherproofed with a protective coating that results in a glossy plastic appearance. The project was three years in the making, and the finished product uses just $9 of industrial grade recycled cardboard. Gafni's filmmaker friend Giora Kariv has created a documentary film about the cardboard bike project, featuring an examination of the building process and interviews with Gafni. Well worth a look.
