Despite its better than expected earnings report for the second quarter, American fashion giant Ralph Lauren announced today that its in the process of closing the Ralph Lauren Rugby brand. In a statement, Ralph Lauren explained the closure allows the company “to focus resources on higher growth, more scalable global opportunities with the core Ralph Lauren brand.”
Like its Polo brand, Ralph Lauren utilized the sport of rugby as an appeal to the 25 and under shoppers. Featuring a mix of styles inspired by varsity sports, outdoor exploration, Ivy League prep, and urban smarts, Ralph Lauren opened the first Rugby shop in 2004 on Boston’s trendy Newbury Street. 13 other stores followed, including locations in London, Japan, as well as an online shop, all scheduled to close starting February 2013.
