Leo Chang Talks About The Nike Zoom KD V | Video

In his quest to lead his Oklahoma City Thunder team back to the NBA championship for the second year in a row, Kevin Durant can rightfully include Leo Chang as a member of his supporting cast. Chang is the Nike Basketball Footwear Design Director and the lead designer for each of Kevin Durant's signature shoes, the fifth and latest iteration bearing a number of personal touches specific to the three-time NBA scoring champ. As Chang explains in an exclusive interview with Sole Collector, the process typically begins with a face-to-face meeting in Oklahoma City. Last year when Chang asked Durant why he wore no. 5 in Turkey and the Olympics, Durant replied that it all starts with the five guys on the court. Consequently, that number appears throughout the shoe's exterior, including the five-sided pentagon and five-pointed star designs across the outsole. They hark back to Durant's hometown of Washington D.C., even mimicking the configuration of the city's map. In addition to the numerous personal signifiers that riddle the shoe, Chang explains that it was Durant who requested a Max Air unit in the heel of a lightweight mid-top, finished in bright colors that can be seen from the third level of the arena.
