COMME des GARçONS Unveiled Dover Street Market New York Location | Preview

Normally secretive, fashion label COMME des GARçONS did something quite uncharacteristic earlier today when it unveiled the location for its upcoming Dover Street Market New York. Well known for its penchant to open storefront in unconventional locations, designer Rei Kawakubo and executive Adrian Joffe picked a Gothic Cathedral-like building as the emporium's first ever US location.

With some 20,000 square-foot of space spread across seven-levels, the building first took shape in 1909 with funding by John D. Rockefeller. During its 103 years course, the building was home to various institutions, including New York School of Applied Design for Women and most recently, Touro College. Like COMME des GARçONS' New York flagship store in Chelsea, where it was the first and only fashion retail spot in the neighborhood for a number of years, Dover Street Market New York will be in the mostly residential neighborhood of Murrary Hill. Nicknamed as "Curry Hill" by some for its long stretch of Indian restaurants and South East Asian marketplaces, the 160 Lexington Avenue and East 30th Street store location will be opening its doors around December 2013.
