Mistaken at first as the 2014 sequel to Godzilla, director Guillermo del Toro's anticipated sci-fi film, Pacific Rim, released its first trailer late last night. Presented by movie studio Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures, the same corporate partners that sponsored the Dark Knight Trilogy and the upcoming Man of Steel, Pacific Rim is a $200 million dollars, live-action homage to Japanese kaiju (monster) and giant-mecha genres. It focuses on an ongoing invasion of giant monsters known as Kaiju, inter-dimensional beings who found Earth through a dimensional portal at the bottom of Pacific Ocean. In the defense of mankind and survival of the human race, giant robots called Jaegers were put into action, though the odds are heavily in favor of the Kaijus.
Think of the film as Godzilla and Cloverfield meet Big O with bits of Neon Genesis Evangelion and Gundam added in, Pacific Rim will feature Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, as well as actors Charlie Day and Ron Perlman. The invasion starts on July 12, 2013.
